Quantum turbulence-from superfluid helium to atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

چکیده
This paper reviews recent developments in the physics of quantum turbulence (QT). QT was discovered in superfluid (4)He in the 1950s, while the research has taken a new direction since the middle of the 1990s. QT is comprised of quantized vortices that are definite topological defects and expected to give a prototype of turbulence much simpler than usual classical turbulence. We give a general introduction and brief review of classical turbulence followed by a description of the dynamics of quantized vortices. After mentioning the modern research trends in QT, we discuss the energy spectra, the energy cascade and the possible dissipation mechanism of QT at very low temperatures. The last part is devoted to QT in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

Turbulence in a Bose-Einstein condensate
We numerically model turbulence in a trapped atomic Bose–Einstein condensate by solving the Gross–Pitaevskii nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We find that, after an initial growth, the vortex length decays approximately as t−1 where t is time, consistent with experiments in turbulent superfluid helium, and that the velocity components obey power-law statistics, again in agreement with observati...
متن کاملIntroduction to quantum turbulence.
The term quantum turbulence denotes the turbulent motion of quantum fluids, systems such as superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, which are characterized by quantized vorticity, superfluidity, and, at finite temperatures, two-fluid behavior. This article introduces their basic properties, describes types and regimes of turbulence that have been observed, and highlights similar...

In a recent experiment Paoletti [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 154501 (2008)]10.1103/PhysRevLett.101.154501 monitored the motion of tracer particles in turbulent superfluid helium and inferred that the velocity components do not obey the Gaussian statistics observed in ordinary turbulence. Motivated by their experiment, we create a small 3D turbulent state in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, compute...
متن کاملSPECIAL FEATURE: PERSPECTIVE Vortices and turbulence in trapped atomic condensates
After more than a decade of experiments generating and studying the physics of quantized vortices in atomic gas Bose–Einstein condensates, research is beginning to focus on the roles of vortices in quantum turbulence, as well as other measures of quantum turbulence in atomic condensates. Such research directions have the potential to uncover new insights into quantum turbulence, vortices, and s...
متن کاملQuantized vortices in BEC and superconductors
Quantized vortices is a well-know signature of superfluidity. They have been studied extensively in superfluid Helium, type-II superconductors, Bose Einstein condensates and more recently in Fermi gas. We will discuss some mathematical analysis and numerical simulations of the quantized vortex nucleations in superconductors and Bose-Einstein condensates and discuss their connections and similar...
